Sam Heughan Addresses James Bond Rumors, Says He Would Be Interested In Role

Last year, Daniel Craig confirmed that he'll be stepping down from the James Bond role following the release of No Time to Die.

Craig, the longest-tenured Bond actor, has suited up as 007 for five films. Aside from No Time to Die, he also played the character in Casino Royale (2006), Quantom of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015).

A decision hasn't been made regarding Craig's replacement, but Outlander star Sam Heughan has been widely mentioned as a possible candidate to assume the 007 role.

Heughan is also frequently listed as one of the top betting favorites to replace Craig, but nothing has been set in stone. Richard Madden, Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, Henry Cavill and Tom Hiddleston are also among the big-named actors who've been rumored as potential options.

During an interview with The Daily Telegraph, the Bond rumors came up, and Heughan expressed an interest in taking on the character.

"Obviously, yes – it would be a big yes," Heughan said. "Of course any actor would want it. But I also have a theory that any reasonably well-known British actor who’s worn a suit instantly has their name thrown into the ring by fans."

Back in March, Heughan revealed that he previously auditioned for  the James Bond role, noting that there were talks about making the character "younger" for Bond 21.

Of course, the role went to Craig, who was 38 years of age at the time of Casino Royale's release. He'll be 53 years of age by the time No Time to Die is released in theaters.

To date, George Lazenby remains the youngest actor to play James Bond. He was only 29 years of age when he starred in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

This was the only Bond film Lazenby did before stepping away.

Since No Time to Die will mark Craig's final outing as Bond, some have wondered if his character will be killed off. There have lots of rumors about a female being cast for the role, but Bond movie series producer Barbara Broccoli has stated that a character will still be played by a male.
